Hi, I’m Jason, the author of World Fitness Network. I’m from the West Coast in the
Back in my high school years, I was the scrawniest of all the guys. During that time, I took a one semester weight lifting course with about 40 other students and I always lifted the least amount of weight in my class.
I remember the lifting test at the end of the semester. A few guys laughed as they watched me struggle to bench press 95 pounds just one time for my max. That was an experience I’ll never forget.
Being so thin naturally led me to become a runner. I ran cross country and track through all four years of high school and swam competitively for 2 years. Each sport relied heavily on interval training to get us into competitive condition. I even ran the L.A. Marathon in my junior year.
As soon as I graduated from high school, I was tired of always being the skinny little guy. I got a gym membership and started going 3 times a week. Progress was slow but steady, and I managed to gain a little over 20 pounds in about 3-4 months.
Was it a Natural Change in Metabolism?
After finishing my first year in college, I went on a two year mission to
I returned from my mission weighing in at 138 pounds and started right back into my training. This time around, I was a little savvier and purposely took a picture for comparison and recorded my weight. If I had known I would ever use these later, I would have tried harder to use uniform lighting conditions and shooting distances, and I would have shown my legs. I also would have used a better camera- these were taken using the still-picture function on a video camera.

The results were as follows: I took the pictures in mid September, October, and early December. My weight gains were 7.9 lbs in the first month and 10.5 pounds in the second month and a half for a total of 18.4 pounds… it took me another year to gain my next 20 pounds after that.
This was just the very beginning, however, and I’ve been lifting for a combined total of 7-8 years now. I’ve had to learn slowly through alot of trial and error.
What am I trying to say?
I’d like to put these pictures in context. I’m not trying to brag about gains or anything like that. In fact, I felt very self-conscious about putting these up in the first place. I don’t believe these gains are exceptional or out of the ordinary. They’re just pretty good for a blogger.
I’m just trying to show that I’ve been there as a beginner. I know it’s tough to get started when you don’t really know what you’re doing, but I also know that you can make great progress in just a matter of months if you’re willing to learn everything you can and apply yourself.
I believe that most beginners will have results that are at least as good as mine if they have a good base of knowledge and a strong commitment. You can find much better before and after pictures out there with more impressive results. I feel that I just had reasonable gains that came from following a sensible plan.
I had already gone through the process of building some strength once during my first year of college, so it was much easier to do the second time around. I didn’t have to waste time with trial and error… but don’t get me wrong, I work hard in the gym and grit my teeth when I lift.
The fact that knowing how to build a better body is so key is what prompted me to create this website. Regardless of who you are, man or woman, young or old, weight lifting & some cardiovascular training together make the best way to build strength and lose fat at the same time.
My hope is that I can reach out to others who are either looking to get in shape or are working to get into better shape. This is something I’m very passionate about, and I try to read everything I can on the subject. I’m trying to make this website informative while still having a little fun at the same time. Your comments and recommendations are always welcome and appreciated.
